What is the difference between Travel Insurance and Emergency Medical Insurance?

Emergency Medical Insurance (also known as Travel Medical Insurance) is a type of CAA Travel Insurance plan that covers emergency medical costs while travelling.

Are there any other CAA Travel Insurance plans?

Apart from Emergency Medical Insurance, CAA also provides a Deluxe Holiday plan, a Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan, Top-up and Extension plans, and a Visitors to Canada plan.

What is the difference between all the CAA Travel Insurance plans?

The Emergency Medical Insurance plan is a type of CAA Travel Insurance plan that only covers emergency medical expenses while travelling.

The Deluxe Holiday plan is a type of premium CAA Travel Insurance plan that provides you with full comprehensive coverage including emergency medical, lost baggage, lost documents, flight delays, travel accidents, trip cancellations, trip interruptions, etc.

The Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan is a type of CAA Travel Insurance plan that provides insurance coverage if you need to unexpectedly cancel or interrupt your travel plans. This includes unexpected illnesses for you or your immediate family members.

The Top-up and Extension plan is a type of CAA Travel Insurance plan that allows you to extend the coverage of your existing Travel Insurance policy. For example, if you’re travelling for work and want to extend your trip, you can top-up your work Travel Insurance coverage.

The Visitors to Canada plan is a type of CAA Travel Insurance plan that provides Travel Insurance coverage like emergency medical, emergency dental, medical repatriation, subsistence allowance, etc. to your friends and family visiting from outside Canada.

Why should I purchase Travel Insurance FAQ’s

Why do I need Travel Medical Insurance?

While your government healthcare provides you with medical coverage inside your home province, it becomes limited once you’re outside. Plus, any medical emergency that occurs outside Canada can be significantly more expensive than at home. Having Emergency Medical Insurance protects you against such unforeseen and costly medical expenses while you’re travelling.

What type of Travel Medical Insurance package is best for me?

Depending on your preferences, CAA Travel Insurance offers two types of Emergency Medical Insurance plans:

The Multi-Trip Plan is perfect for frequent travellers who love the convenience of purchasing once and travelling throughout the year. The plan provides you with 365 days of coverage within Canada and 4, 8, 15, 30, or 60 days per trip outside Canada – as many times as you want throughout the year.

The Single Trip Plan is perfect for those travellers who need Travel Insurance for just one trip. The plan provides coverage for a single trip, up to one year (365 days) long.

Am I eligible to buy CAA Travel Medical Insurance?

You are eligible to purchase an Emergency Medical Insurance policy from CAA Saskatchewan if you:

  • Are a Saskatchewan resident.
  • Are insured under a valid Canadian government healthcare policy.
  • Meet the eligibility requirements and plan qualifications.
  • Purchase the policy before leaving Saskatchewan.

You are not eligible for any coverage under an Emergency Medical Insurance policy if:

  • Your trip is booked or taken against advice from a medical professional.
  • You have received a diagnosis of terminal illness with less than 6 months to live.
  • You require kidney dialysis.
  • You have ever had an organ transplant (except cornea transplant).
  • You have been diagnosed with and/or received medical treatment for metastatic cancer in the last five years.
  • You have been prescribed or are taking home oxygen for a lung condition in the last 12 months.
Do I have to answer a questionnaire to buy a CAA Travel Medical Insurance policy?

Customers, over the age of 55, will be required to complete a medical questionnaire to determine a plan and premium that is best suited for them based on their personal needs.

Isn’t my credit card and/or employer’s medical coverage enough for me?

For in-province and in-country trips, your credit card and/or employer’s medical coverage may be sufficient. However, for international trips just relying on them could prove to be a costly affair.

Further, they could have different benefits, exclusions, and limitations when compared to an Emergency Medical Insurance policy. While reviewing your options, always consider the following points:

  • Is your family covered under your employer’s medical coverage?
  • What is the duration of coverage in your employer’s medical policy?
  • Is there a limit on the number of days you’re allowed to travel under your employer’s coverage?
  • Is there a possibility of coverage extension under your employer’s medical policy?
  • Does your employer’s medical policy include coverage for an air ambulance?
  • Does your employer’s medical coverage include medical repatriation?
Why do I need a Travel Insurance policy?

Buying a Travel Insurance policy not only helps you with emergency medical coverage while travelling but also provides you with the assurance that you’re protected in the event of trip cancellations or interruptions.

Due to unexpected and unforeseen events, you could face the need to change or cancel your travel plans, which could be costly and non-refundable. At times like these when things are out of your control, a Travel Insurance policy helps protect your investment.

Do I have to fill a questionnaire to buy a Trip Cancellation and Interruption policy?

You do not need to fill out a medical questionnaire to purchase CAA Saskatchewan’s Trip Cancellation and Interruption Travel Insurance plan. It is, however, necessary that all your pre-existing conditions

(medical or other) are stable and controlled prior to the purchase of your insurance policy and prior to your date of departure.

Travelling during COVID-19 FAQ’s

How does the change in the COVID-19 travel advisories impact coverage?

Emergency Medical Coverage:

  • When there are no Level 3 or Level 4 COVID-19 travel advisories for a traveller’s destination, full coverage for COVID-19 is available regardless of vaccination status
  • If, prior to departure, a Level 3 or Level 4 COVID-19 travel advisory is implemented for a destination, coverage restrictions will apply
    • During Level 3 – coverage available for travellers meeting vaccination requirements
    • During Level 4 – no coverage available for COVID-19 related illnesses
Is COVID-19 covered under a CAA Travel Medical Insurance policy?

Yes, CAA Travel Medical Insurance provides coverage for COVID-19-related illnesses.

When the Canadian government has issued a Level 3 travel advisory (avoid non-essential travel), the coverage is up to CAD $2.5 million (if partially vaccinated) and up to CAD $5 million (if fully vaccinated).

Travellers must have received their shot (first dose for partially vaccinated, second dose for fully vaccinated) at least 14 days before their departure date. The COVID-19 coverage does not apply to those on a cruise or those travelling to a destination listed in a Level 4 government advisory (avoid all travel).

Am I allowed to travel internationally right now?

Air travel outside of Canada is permitted. However, the Government of Canada has a travel advisory out at this time that states that all non-essential travel must be avoided.

Travelling during such advisories can have an impact on the premium of your Travel Insurance policy.

All travellers entering Canada are subject to testing and quarantine guidelines. You can find all the latest information related to travel and advisories on the Government of Canada website.

Do I have to quarantine in a hotel upon return to Canada if I’m fully vaccinated?

If you’re a fully vaccinated traveller, you are exempt from quarantining when you enter Canada. To be considered a fully vaccinated traveller, you must:

  • Have received the full series of an accepted COVID-19 vaccine or a full series of a combination of accepted vaccines.
  • Have received your last dose at least 14 full days prior to the day you enter Canada.
  • Upload your proof of vaccination in the Government of Canada’s ArriveCAN app.
  • Have no signs or symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Meet all other entry requirements like pre-entry test results, etc.

You must be prepared to quarantine for 14 days in case you do not fulfill the conditions of being a fully vaccinated traveller. In such instances, a suitable quarantine plan must be entered into the ArriveCAN app. For complete eligibility requirements, please visit the Government of Canada page.

Where can I find the latest and most up-to-date information related to COVID-19 travel?

You can find all the latest COVID-19 travel information on the Government of Canada’s website. In addition to that, you can also make use of their COVID-19 Travel Tool Kit that contains links to all the necessary resources related to travelling, testing procedures, quarantine requirements, ArriveCAN, etc.
